About Dr. Ghaffar

Samia A. Ghaffar, MD, is a board-certified Orthopaedic spine surgeon at Neurosurgical Associates Medical Group in Fresno, California.  She is also the Spine Site Director and Volunteer Clinical Faculty for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at UCSF Fresno.

Dr. Ghaffar treats the entire range of spinal conditions, including cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine. Her special interests include cervical and lumbar degenerative changes, as well as trauma and tumor.  She does minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal injections and spinal cord stimulators for the overall conservative and surgical management of her patient’s needs. She is passionate about understanding each individual’s unique needs, educating patients about their condition, and developing custom treatment regimens to ease pain and improve quality of life.

Dr. Ghaffar began her professional pursuits at the University of California, Davis, earning her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. She received the Charles Hess Award upon graduating from UC Davis, which was awarded to one male and one female in the College of Sciences for exemplary community service.  She subsequently obtained her Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, Irvine.  She was instrumental in helping launch a free clinic there and was awarded the Living Our Values Award along with her team.

Before entering private practice, Dr. Ghaffar completed a residency in Orthopaedic surgery at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Fresno, followed by a fellowship in Orthopaedic spine surgery at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington in Seattle. 

Dr. Ghaffar proudly holds membership in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. She is a candidate member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society.  Dr. Ghaffar enjoys volunteering, speaking, and mentoring with Live Again Fresno, a local nonprofit serving children and families. She also works with students through the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society medical student mentoring program. 

Dr. Ghaffar is passionate about promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the orthopedic surgery program at UCSF Fresno and beyond. She is the only female spine surgeon in the Central Valley.
